FACEBOOK USER’S MANUAL

Facebook is one of the Internet’s most widely used social networks, with nearly 1 billion people using it to connect with old friends and meet new one.

People use Facebook to create personal profiles, add other users as “Facebook friends” and share information with them in differentiate ways.

Facebook guides new users to understand how to use Facebook’s  key communication and networking features via a user’s manual.

Signing Up

The  first step in using Facebook  is to sign up for creating a new Facebook account.

If you can see the “Sign Up” form , fill out your name , mobile number or email address. , a new password , your date of birth and your gender. If u don’t see the form , click Sign Up , then fill out the form in below.

Select Sign Up.

After sign up, you’ll need to ratify your email address or phone number. You’ll get an email or a text message which help you to confirm your account.

Login & Password

Go to www.facebook.com at the top and enter one of the following in below :

  1. Email address : You can log in with an email address that is verified.
  2. Username : You can also log in with a new username.
  3. Phone Number : You can log in with a mobile number that is activated. 

Enter your password.

Click log in.

To change Your Password

You can change your password . If u know your current password, you can change it.

  1. Click in the top right corner of facebook page and select Settings.
  2. Go to General Account Settings.
  3. Click Password.
  4. Enter your current and new password.
  5. Select Save Changes.

Profile and Timeline

A profile is like a storybook that will exhibit your story through your collection of the photos, stories and experiences.  Your profile also includes your Timeline.

Here are some required options that you can do in your profile and Timeline:

Upload a Cover Photo and a Profile Picture

  • To  add a profile photo or change your current profile photo :
  1. Hover over your profile picture.
  2. Click Update profile picture.
  3. You Can :
  • Select a photo which you have already uploaded or one in which you are tagged in.
  • Upload a photo from your computer or your mobile.
  • Choose a new photo.
  1. Crop your photo and click Crop and Save. If you don’t want to crop your photo then select Skip Cropping in the bottom left and click Save.

  Note: Your current Profile Picture is always public.

  •   To  add a cover photo or change your current cover photo :

Cover photo is the sizeable photo in the top of your profile picture. You can add or change your Cover Photo by following options :

  1. Go to your cover picture.
  2. Click Update Cover Photo. If you don’t have a current cover photo then select Add Cover Photo.
  3. Select a new photo which you want to upload or choose a photo from photo albums in your facebook profile.
  4. After choosing a photo, you can dragging it up and down by clicking the image.
  5. Click Save.
  •   Fill Out Your Timeline

You can post in your Timeline from the top of your Timeline or from the News Feed:

  1. From the top of your Timeline or from the News Feed , choose what type of story you want to share with your friends ( ex: Status , Photo/Video, Life Event )
  2. Type details which you want to add.
  3. You can also:
  • Tag Friends.
  • Select a date for the story.
  • Add Location.
  • Add a Photo.
  • Add how you are feeling or what you are doing.

4.  Select an audience ( ex : Public ; Friends ; Only Me ; More Options ) for your post.

5.  Click Post.

  •   Update Your Basic Information

For editing your basic and personal info ( ex:  contact information, gender, relationships; work, education, Life Events )

  1. Go to your profile.
  2. Select Update Info option at the bottom of your cover photo.
  3. In the left section, select the section you want to change.
  4. Choose the information you want to edit.
  5. Click Edit in the right of that section & select.
  6. Choose the audience to whom you will allow to see this information, then click Save Changes option.
  •   Edit or Remove a bio from your Profile

 Once you have added a bio to your profile, you can also edit or remove it from your profile.

  1.  Go to your profile.
  2.  Select your current bio which you want to edit and select Edit.
  3.  Choose Edit or Delete and select Save.

Note : Your bio is always public and everyone can see it.

  •    Add Your Relationship Status in Your Profile :
  1. Go to your profile and select About and then select Family and Relationships in the left section.
  2. Select Add your Relationship Status.
  3. Select your relationship status from the dropdown menu. You can also add name of the person with whom you are in a relationship .
  4. Choose the audience with whom you want to share this.
  5. Select Save Changes.
  •   Add Your Relationship as a life event on your profile:
  1. Go to your profile , select About and then Life Events and select add a life event.
  2. Choose the relationship or event you want to add.  You can also add name of the person with whom you are in a relationship.
  3. Use the audience selector to choose with whom you want to share this.
  4. Tick the box beside Update relationship status to update your status.
  5. Select Save.
  •   You can control who can see your email address on your profile
  1.      Select About at the top of your profile.
  2.      Select Contact and Basic Info option.
  3.      Click your email address and select the audience from the right of your email address.

Choose any option from these two :

  • Shown on Timeline or
  • Hidden from Timeline.

Connecting

                 1.    Friends

  • To add friend :
  1.  Enter your friend’s name or email address or contact number in the search bar of top in your facebook page.
  2.  Click their name to go to their profile.
  3.  Click Add Friend. You may not see this button on some people’s profiles, it depends on their  privacy settings.
  4.  You can also add friends by importing your contacts.
  5.   While this person to whom you send request,  accepts your request, they’ll show in your facebook Friendlist.

  Note :

  1. If you’ve been once temporarily blocked from sending friend requests, you have to wait until the block is removed .
  2. You should send friend requests to only those people whom you know in real life, like your Friends, family, coworkers or classmates.
  •   To view friend requests you have sent :
  1.  Click symbol of Friend Requests at the top of facebook page.
  2.  Click Find Friends.
  3.  Click View Sent Requests.

By default, anyone on Facebook can add you . If you would like to change who can send you friend requests:

  1. Click symbol at the top right of facebook page beside Privacy Shortcuts.
  2.   Select Settings.
  3.   Click Privacy in the left column.
  4.   Select Edit next to Who can send you friend requests?
  5.   Choose an audience from the dropdown list.
  •   To cancel a friend request:
  1. Click symbol of Friend Requests at the top-right corner of facebook page.
  2.   Click Find Friends.
  3.   Hover over on the request you would like to cancel and select Cancel Request.
  •   To delete pending or hidden friend requests:
  1.  Go to Find Friends.
  2.  Find the request you would like to delete and click Delete.
  •   To unfriend someone:
  1. Go to that person’s profile.
  2.  Hover over the Friends button in the top of their profile.
  3.  Select Unfriend.

  Note :

  1.   If you don’t want someone to see your profile, send you a friend request or a message, you can block them.
  2.   If you choose to unfriend someone, you can remove that person from your  friend list. If you again want to      be friend with that person , you can send a new friend request.
  •  People you may know

People You May Know are people on Facebook whom you may know via facebook.  Those people may based on mutual friends, work and education information or contacts you have imported and many other factors.

  People You May Know can appear :

  •  On the Find Friends
  • On your home page.
  • In ad space around the site.

2.  Tagging

When you tag someone, you create a link to their profile. The post you tag the person  may also be added to that person’s Timeline.

Anyone can tag you in photos and other posts. Tags from people who are not your  friends may appear in your Timeline review, where you can decide if you want to allow them on your Timeline.

If you don’t like something you are tagged in, you can remove the tag or ask the person who tagged you to remove the post.

You will receive a notification when someone tags you, Depending on your settings:

  1.  Click symbol at the top of right corner in facebook page next to Privacy Shortcuts.
  2.  Select Settings.
  3.  Select Notifications in the left section.
  4.  Select Tags under the What You Get Notified About section.
  5.  Choose an audience from dropdown list from whom you want to receive notifications.

 

     1.   Timeline Review

Timeline review is an option that lets you choose for the posts in which you are tagged in will be appeared in your timeline or not. Anyone can tag you in photos and other posts.

When people who  are not your  friends  tag you in a post, they will automatically go to the Timeline review option . To turn on  the Timeline review:

  1. Select  symbol at the top of right corner of facebook page next to Privacy Shortcuts.
  2.   Click Settings.
  3.   Choose Timeline and Tagging option in the left section.
  4.  Choose the option Review posts friends tag you in before they appear on your Timeline? under Who can add things to my timeline? Click Edit to the far right.
  5.  Choose Enabled option from the dropdown menu.

  Choose who can sees suggestions to tag you in photos :

  1.   Select symbol at the top -right corner of facebook page next to Privacy Shortcuts.
  2.   Click Settings.
  3.   Select Timeline and Tagging option in the left section.
  4.   Select How can I manage tags people add and tagging suggestions?
  5.   Select the option Who sees tag suggestions when photos that look like you are uploaded?
  6. Choose an audience from the dropdown menu.

     2.   Tag  Review

Tag review is an option that lets you approve for the posts that your friend tagged you. Anyone will not be allowed to tag you something until you turn tag review option to approve it.

  • To turn on tag review option:
  1.  Select symbol at the top of right corner in facebook page next to Privacy Shortcuts.
  2.  Select Settings.
  3.  Select Timeline and Tagging option in the left column.
  4.  Choose the option Review tags people add to your own posts before the tags appear on Facebook? under How can I manage tags people add and tagging suggestions? Select Edit at right.
  5.  Click Enabled option from the dropdown menu.

Note  :    After approving a tag, the person whom you have tagged and their friends may see your post.

  •  Remove Tag

If you want to remove a tag from a post you have been tagged in, click the symbol in the top right of the post and select Remove Tag.

You can also remove tags from multiple posts :

  1.   Go to activity log.
  2.   Select Photos in the left column.
  3.   Click to check the box to the left of the posts you would like to remove a tag from.
  4.   Click Report/Remove Tags at the top of the page.
  5.   Click Untag Photos to confirm.

 

3.      Follow

You can automatically follow people who are your friends and see their posts in your News Feed.  You can also follow  the people and their posts who allow Everybody to follow them, like celebrities, political figures and other people about whom you are interested.

  • To follow someone, go to their profile and click Follow. You’ll only be able to follow people who are your friends or who allow Everybody to follow them.
  • If you send someone a friend request who allows Everybody to follow them, you’ll automatically follow their posts.
  • Unfollow someone by going to their profile and clicking Following below their cover photo. You can also unfollow a Page or group.

Your friends on Facebook follow you automatically and can see your posts in  your News Feed. You can also allow people who aren’t your friends to follow you:

  1.    Go to your Settings.
  2.    Select Followers in the left column.
  3.    Choose Everybody next to Who Can Follow Me.
  4.    Your Followers can see posts your share as Public in News Feed.

The people you follow can see that you’re following them. To adjust who else can see the people and lists you’re following:

  1.  Go to your Profile.
  2.  Click Friends below your cover Photo.
  3.  Select Edit Privacy.
  4.  In the Following section select an audience from dropdown menu.
  •   To see a list of the people you’re following:
  1.   Go to your Profile.
  2.   Click Friends below your cover Photo.
  3.   Click More at right of Friends.
  4.   Select Following from dropdown menu.

Note  :    If you don’t see Following, it means you’re not following anyone yet.

  •   To change who can follow you:
  1.   Go to your Settings.
  2.   Select Followers in the left column.
  3.   Select Friends or Everybody next to Who Can Follow Me.

 Note  :    If you don’t want someone to follow you, you can block them.

Sharing

                  1.     Photos

  •          Uploading Photos and Profile Pictures

   To add and post photos to Facebook:

  1.  At the top of your News Feed, click Add Photos/Videos to upload photos or videos to your Timeline Photos album, or Create Photo Album to upload to a new album.
  2.  Select the photos or videos you want to add to facebook.
  3.  You can also :
  • Tag Friends.
  • Share what you’re doing or how you’re feeling.
  • Add Location.
  1. Click Post.

You can also upload photos to an existing album. You can only add photos to albums you’ve created. To add photos to an existing album:

  1.   Go to the Albums where you want to add photo.
  2.   Click Add Photos at the top right.
  3.   Pick the image files you want to upload.
  4.   Select image/images and cick at Open button.
  5.   Check the blue progress bar and click Post Photos once it is complete.

While your files are uploading,  you can :

  • Edit the album title or description.
  • Add photo captions.
  • Tag friends.
  • Add a date.
  • Add a location.

Note  :    You can upload about 1000 photos per album.

  •   To upload and post a photo to your friend’s Timeline:
  1.   Go to your friend’s Timeline and click Photo/Video at the top.
  2.   Click at the symbol of camera to choose a photo from your computer.
  3.   Click Post.
  •    To move a photo to another album:
  1.   Go to your profile and click Photos.
  2.   Click Albums.
  3.   Hover over the photo and click the sign of Edit or Remove.
  4.   Select Move To Other Album and move the photo to an album you choose from the dropdown menu.
  5.   Click Move Photo.
  •    To  delete a particular photo or delete an album :
  1.    Click the photo to open it.
  2.    Click Options on the menu bar below the photo.
  3.    Select Delete This Photo and click Confirm.
  4.    Go to your albums and click the album you want to delete.
  5.    Click at the sign of settings in the top right corner.
  6.    Select Delete Album and click to confirm.

Note  :    Keep in mind that once you delete an album, you can’t restore it.

  •  Shared  Albums

A shared album is an album where multiple people can upload photos. When you make an album shared, you can add your friends as contributors. This allows them to add, view and edit photos in the album.

  •   To create a shared album:
  1.   Go to an album you have created.
  2.   Click Change to Shared Album in the top-left corner.
  3.   Enter the names of contributors to whom you want to add.
  4.   Select an audience from the dropdown menu.
  5.   Click Save.
  •     To edit the privacy settings for photo albums you’ve posted:
  1.   Go to your profile and click Photos.
  2.   Click Albums.
  3.   Click the audience selector under each album to control who can see your album.

   2.   Videos

  •            Uploading and Viewing Videos

   To upload videos from your Timeline:

  1.   Click in Photos/Videos at the top of your timeline.
  2.   Click Upload Photos/ Video and choose a video file from your computer.
  3.   Click Post.
  •     To upload videos from your News Feed:
  1.   Click in Add Photos/Video at the top of your News feed.
  2.   Choose a video file from your computer.
  3.   Click Post.
  •    To tag friends in a video after you’ve posted it to Facebook:
  1.   Click in the top right corner of your video post.
  2.   Click Tag Friends.
  3.   Type the name of the person you want to tag. Click their name when it appears in the list of results.
  4.   Click Submit.
  •     To change the privacy setting for a video you’ve added:
  1.  Go to your photo albums and click
  2.  Click the video you want to adjust.
  3.  Click the audience selector in the top right.
  4.  Choose an audience for your video.

Note  :    Keep in mind that you can only adjust the privacy settings for videos you have added to Facebook.

Messaging

                       1.      Messages

  •           To send a message:
  1. Click Messages at the top of the screen.
  2. Click New Message.
  3. Start typing a name into the To Names of friends will appear in a dropdown.
  4. Select the person or people you want to message.
  5. Type your message and click Send.
  6. You can also message someone by clicking Message at the top of their profile.

Note  :    You can send messages to anyone on Facebook. Messages you send to people to whom you are not connected  may arrive in their message requests.

  •   To add someone to a group conversation:
  1.   Open the conversation.
  2.   Click Actions and select Add Friends To Chat.
  3.   Type the names of people you want to add.
  4.   Click Done.

Note  :    Anyone you add will see all previous messages in the conversation.

 Attachments  and  Stickers

  •    To add a file to your message:
  1.   Click Options in the top right corner of the facebook.
  2.   Select Add Files.
  3.   Click Enter to send.

Stickers are funny and animated characters . They are a great way to share your feeling and add personality to your chats.

  •    To send sticker:
  1.  Open a conversation with a friend.
  2.  Click at any type of Emoji.
  3.  Choose any sticker which you want to send  to your friends.

 

  •     To remove a sticker pack:
  1. Open a conversation and click at any type of emoji.
  2. Click + in the top-right corner.
  3. Scroll to the sticker pack you want to remove.
  4. Click Remove. 

 

  • To delete a message:
  1.   Click Messages on the left side of your homepage.
  2.   Open the conversation you want to delete a message from.
  3.   From the Action menu select Delete Messages.
  4.   Use the checkboxes to select the messages you want to delete.
  5.   Click Delete.
  •    To delete an entire conversation:
  1.   Click Messages on the left side of your homepage.
  2.   Open the conversation you want to delete.
  3.   From the Action menu select Delete Conversation.

Note  :    Once you choose to delete a conversation, this can’t be undone.

  2.      Chat

People use chatbox when their any friend to be online at the same time as you are.

  •   To open a chat with friend:
  1.   Click the name of the friend with whom you want to chat from your chat sidebar.
  2.   If you don’t see your friend’s name, use the search box at the bottom of your sidebar to find them.
  3.   Once you open a chat with a friend, type your message and press Enter to send it.

If you want to chat with more than one friend and want to add them to  the conversation :

  1.   Click Options at the top right corner of your chat window.
  2.   Select Add Friends To Chat from the dropdown menu.
  3.   Enter the names of friends whom you want to add.
  4.   Click Done.

   Note  :    If you’re in a group, you can also chat with the entire group at once.

  •    To turn chat on or off:
  1.   Click Options at the top right corner of your chat side bar.
  2.   Select Turn On Chat or Turn Off Chat.

Note  :    While chat is off, chats from friends automatically go to your inbox for you to read later.

  •   To turn off Chat sounds:
  1.   Click Options at the top right corner of your chat side bar.
  2.   Uncheck Chat Sounds.

Note  :    This will disable all chat sounds. To turn chat sounds back on, just return to the Options menu and check Chat Sounds again.

  •    To turn chat off for just a few friends:      
  1.  Click Options at the top right corner of your chat side bar.
  2.  Select Advanced Settings.
  3.  Click Turn off chat for only some friends.
  4.  List the friends you want to turn off chat for.
  •    To turn off chat for all your friends except a few:
  1.  Click Options at the top right corner of your chat side bar.
  2.  Select Advanced Settings.
  3.  Select Turn off chat for all friends except.
  4.  List the friends you want to turn off chat for.

  3.    Video Calling

  •    To start a video call:
  1.   Open a chat window with a friend.
  2.   Click symbol of video calling in the top right corner.

Note  :    If your friend is not currently able to receive a video call the symbol of video calling will be grayed out, and you’ll see a message that  says that your friend  is currently unavailable for video calling.

   Video calling works with:

  •  Mozilla Firefox.
  •  Google Chrome.
  • Opera.   

   1.   Privacy

Your privacy settings page has a group of general controls for your Facebook account. To view and adjust your privacy settings:

  1.   Click symbol at the top right of facebook page beside Privacy Shortcuts.
  2.   Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
  3.   Select Privacy on the left section.
  4.   Select Who can see your future posts?  from dropdown menu and edit it.

When you share something on your Timeline, use the audience selector to choose with whom you’ll share.

You also have the option to change audience of your posts individually. Just go to the post which you want to change and choose a different audience.

Within your account settings, you’ll find a tool that helps you change the audience of your  posts you’ve shared with Public or Friends of Friends to Friends Only. To use this tool:

  •   Click symbol at the top right of facebook page beside Privacy Shortcuts.
  •   Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
  •   Select Privacy on the left section.
  •   Select Limit the audience for posts I’ve shared with friends of friends or Public? under the Who can see my stuff? section.
  • Click Limit Old Posts.

    2.   Privacy  Shortcuts

Your Privacy Shortcuts give you quick access to some of the most widely used privacy settings and tools. Click Privacy Shortcuts at the top of the page to see shortcuts that help you manage:

  • Who can see my stuff? –  There you can control to whom you allow to see your posts under Who can see your future posts? Choose audience selector from dropdown menu to whom you want to share your current posts. You can also edit it from Privacy under Settings.

 

  • Who can contact me?There you can control who can send you friend requests under Who can send me friend requests? Choose audience selector from dropdown menu to whom you allow to send you friend requests. You can also edit it from Privacy under Settings.

 

  •  How do I stop someone from bothering me? There you can block anyone to whom you don’t want as your friend. You can also prevent them from starting conversations with you or following you.  Add name or email to whom you want to block and Block.

    3.   Privacy  Checkup 

You can use the Privacy Checkup to review and adjust your privacy settings to help make sure that you are sharing posts  with who you want. To use the Privacy Checkup:

  1.  Click Privacy Shortcuts at the top of facebook
  2.  Select Privacy Checkup.

Note  :   ⃝ The Privacy Checkup will help you review who sees your posts.

⃝ Whenever you post from News Feed or your profile, you can choose an audience to control who sees it.

 

  • Facebook  for  mobile

When using Facebook on your mobile device, some apps and features don’t have an audience selector to control the audience of posts and other stuff you share. To select the audience  with whom you want to share stuff  from these apps:

  1.  Click symbol at the top right of facebook page beside Privacy Shortcuts.
  2.  Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
  3.  Click Apps in left section.
  4.  look for the setting Old versions of Facebook for mobile.
  5.  Select audience selector from dropdown menu on below.
  • Activity log

Your activity log is a tool that lets you review and manage what you share on Facebook. To get to your activity log, click symbol in the top-right corner of  Facebook page (ex: your homepage) and select Activity Log.

Uses of Activity log to remove or hide stories :

  1.  Select activity log in your profile.
  2.  Find out the story you are looking for.
  3.  Choose the audience to whom you want to share it.
  4.  Select any option between Delete or Hide to delete or hide stories from your Timeline.

Note  :  Only you are allowed to see your activity log. However, stories in your activity log may appear other many places in Facebook, like on your Timeline, or in News Feeds or search.

Log Out

  •          To log out to facebook :
  1. Click symbol at top right of facebook page.
  2. Select Log Out.

 Deactivate Account

You can deactivate your account temporarily and choose to come back whenever you want.

  •  To deactivate your account:
  1.  Click symbol at top right of facebook page.
  2.  Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
  3.  Select Security in the left column.
  4.  Choose Deactivate your account then follow the steps to confirm.

 Note  :   If you deactivate your account your profile won’t be visible to other people on Facebook and people won’t be able to search for you.

General FAQ

How does whatsapp work?

Whatsapp messenger can only be used on iphone, blackberry, windows and android.

Whatsapp blocking:

If someone has blocked you there are a few ways to find out.

  • When you send a message you only see one of the checkmarks .Won’t see a second checkmark.
  • Status below the usernames won’t show last seen and online anymore.
  • Cannot see the profile picture anymore.

Automatic Download:

Can download the images, videos and audios automatically. Can set it on your choice.

Go to Settings>chats and calls>media auto download.

Blocking others:

  • Message will not be delivered to your phone.
  • Last seen and online will not be shown to the blocked user anymore.
  • Profile picture won’t be viewable by the blocked user.
  • Cannot send messages to the blocked user.

 

Go to more>block.

Changing phone number in WhatsApp:

To change your number you can check the following steps:

  • Make sure that the new phone number works so you can receive a verification message.
  • go to settings> account >change number.
  • Enter your old or recent number first and new number in the second. Save.

Changing status message:

All other user can see status. This way you can show your contacts what you are doing like whether you are sleeping, eating, working, sporting etc.

Go to status>choose or write.

Delete a chat:

Deleting message is be able in whatsapp.

Select messages>delete.

Delete whatsapp:

Go to Google play and uninstall the app.

Group conversations:

Can create group on whatsapp .You can send messages to more than one user at a time .You may leave a group on your wish and may add a person to a group if you are the admin of this particular group.

Adding contacts to whatsapp:

Whatsapp automatically check your phone contact list and add whatsapp users in your whatsapp contact list.

Changing profile picture:
Choose  picture from gallery or take picture and set .This picture is viewable based on your choosing option like everybody, my contacts or nobody.

Go to settings>profile>set picture.

About last seen:

When you have been last online the users can see you. Showing online means you are active in WhatsApp. Last seen refers the time when you have beeen lats online. You may  turn off your last seen.

Go to settings>account>privacy> last seen.

Removing last seen from your account:

1.Click settings.

2.Choose chat settings

3. choose option  ‘Turnoff last seen.’

Note: After  turn off this option nobody can see you last online as well as you will not be able to see other users .you can change this option anytime.

Sending voice messages:

Through voice messaging you can record a spoken message and send.

Using broadcast list:

Send at once a mass message to multiple people for e.g. Christmas . Take the following steps to send a message :

  • go to settings>new broadcast list
  • Add people by their names then create.
  • Type your message and send.

 

Muting group chats :
Group messaging is to pool your friends together for a chat. Choose mute option to get out from notifications. You can mute notifications for 8 hours, 1 week or an entire year.

Forward message and images:

To share funny picture or videos press and hold on the chat or images or videos>go to the top right> tap  forward button> choose a contact >send.

Pop up notifications:

Go to settings>notifications>pop up notifications> select “only when screen off”. Others“no pop up”, “only when screen on”, “always show pop up”.
